Last month my wife Jeanny and I were discussing how to celebrate Tom, our son's, upcoming third birthday. We talked about having a party here, in Florida, and inviting her Filipina friends, some of whom have children. We also talked about taking Tom to Disney World which is only 60 miles away. At the end of the conversation she suggested that we throw a party in her family's village in Mindanao and invite all the children there. I was so proud of her for suggesting such a thing and immediately agreed with her.
Luke 14:13 "But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind."
I don't think there were any crippled, lame or blind children there but they were all definitely poor. Although my son's birthday, here in Florida, was not ignored....he got a birthday cake and a bicycle (with trainer wheels), it was not an opulent event.
I know that Tom doesn't understand yet, but I hope when he is old enough to see what we did that he will embrace it and make it part of his life to continue to do the same thing on each of his birthdays and derive a feeling of satisfaction in taking a step in God's word.
